Subluxation
Overview
A
subluxation, as defined by the Association of Chiropractic Colleges is: "A
subluxation is a complex of functional and/or structural and/or pathological
articular changes that compromise neural integrity and may influence organ
system function and general health."
Vertebral
Subluxation Complex (VSC) is the term that doctors of chiropractic use to
describe the misalignment of spinal vertebrae and disc resulting in adverse
affects on nerves and other tissues of the human body. Even minor degress of
VSC may produce pressure and irritation upon nerves. This interference may
alter the transmission of vital messages transmitted via the nervous system to
and from the organs, cells and tissues of the body.
The common stresses and
strains of normal living, including the downward force of gravity, often
interfer with body balance and produce poor posture. Misalignment and
distortion of the spinal vertebrae and disc frequently result.
At the top of the
spinal column rests the skull. It houses and protects the brain where the
nerves originate. From the brain, the nerves extend downward through the spinal
cord. The vertebrae fro a vertical canal that houses and protects the spinal
cord.
Thirty one pairs of nerve roots emerge from the spinal cord
through openings between the vetrebrae. Each nerve root extends to, and
controls, a specific area of the body.
When one or more
vertebrae become misaligned, this exerts abnormal pressure on the nerves
altering nerve flow functions and causes distortion of disc areas. This event
can cause nature's normal healing processes to be impacted.
Your professional
doctor of chiropractic is the only health care professional who has extensive
specialized chiropractic training and expertise to restore normal nerve
function through the natural correction of VSC. |
